AFN has raised concerns about the Region IV voting district, which is represented by the Division of Elections and has over 40,000 registered voters in 107 precincts for House Districts 37 through 40. The absence of a Region IV Supervisor is a cause of concern as it puts this rural voting district at a disadvantage for the upcoming election year. The Supervisor’s role is critical in building relationships and ensuring a successful election experience. Additionally, the Supervisor should be an advocate for the districts, identifying and resolving any obstacles that may pose a barrier for voters.
It has come to AFN’s attention that for the 2024 election cycle, the Division plans to limit early and absentee in-person voting to only four locations in the Anchorage area. While it may lessen the burden on the Division, it creates additional barriers for voters who may not have easy access to these limited locations. This decision runs counter to the premise that the Division offers fair and accessible election experiences and harms Alaska Native people.
AFN is requesting that the Division consider the following:
1. Hire a Region IV Supervisor who can effectively carry out the necessary duties to support a fair and accessible 2024 election for the voters of this region.
2. Reverse the decision to limit early and absentee voting locations in the Anchorage area, allowing organizations such as the Cook Inlet Tribal Council to provide more access to voters.
Effective recruitment and retention of the election workforce and removing barriers to voter access are crucial for the people of the State of Alaska. AFN urges the Division of Elections to take immediate steps to address these concerns and ensure that all Alaskans have a fair and accessible voting experience.
