2024 AFN Passed Resolutions

On the final day of the 2024 AFN Convention, the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) delegates voted to pass 18 resolutions. These included endorsements for Representative Mary Sattler Peltola in her campaign to continue representing Alaska in the nation’s capital, as well as a “no” vote on Ballot Measure 2 to protect Alaska’s open primary and ranked choice voting election system.

“Representative Mary Peltola is a dedicated and passionate advocate for the people of Alaska,” Joe Nelson, AFN Co-Chair, said. “Her commitment to representing our state in the nation’s capital and her unwavering support for our communities make her the ideal candidate to continue serving Alaska. I am proud to support Mary in her efforts to ensure that Alaskans have a strong voice in Washington, D.C.”

The resolutions process not only fosters meaningful discussions but also ensures that diverse perspectives are considered, leading to well-informed and inclusive decision-making. The resolutions passed at the AFN Convention serve as a roadmap for future actions, reflecting the collective will and vision of AFN’s members. The resolution process plays a crucial role in upholding the democratic principles and ensuring that the AFN and its members remain responsive to the needs and concerns of not only AFN members, but our people and communities.

“The resolution process at the AFN Convention is of utmost importance as it provides an opportunity for AFN’s delegates to address and deliberate on key issues that impact our Alaska Native communities,” Ben Mallott, AFN President, said. “Resolutions shape the direction and priorities of AFN, ultimately influencing our seat at the table and ensuring our political representation, and is why endorsements like ours for Representative Peltola and No On 2 are critical for our communities.”

The AFN board and membership urge Alaska Natives to make their voices heard during this election. “Voting is not only our right—it is our power,” Ana Hoffman, AFN Co-Chair, said. “When we vote, we flex our power to choose, to speak up, and to stand with those who support our views and values. Every vote counts, and let’s make our voices heard for the future we believe in.”
