CO-STEWARDSHIP TALKING CIRCLE WITH FEDERAL LAND AGENCIES  

Raina Thiele, Yup’ik/Dena’ina, Senior Advisor for Alaskan Affairs and Strategic Priorities, Department of Interior; and personal introductions by Alaska Regional leadership from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service; Bureau of Land Management; and U.S. Forest Service 

Tribal, Alaska Native Corporation, and Alaska Native organization engagement and collaborative management with Alaska Native people is essential to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the U.S. Forest Service. Indigenous peoples are key partners in land stewardship, and our desire and need for shared stewardship goes beyond requirements in laws and policy. The federal agencies listed above are hosting a series of Co-stewardship Talking Circle sessions this freeze-up season in various locations in Alaska. It is our goal to honor Tribal Sovereignty and Self-Determination while seeking closer ties, understanding and shared stewardship through opportunities to strengthen collaborative investment in thoughtful and creative approaches.

House Natural Resources Committee staff will provide updates on Chair Raúl M. Grijalva’s RESPECT Act. ADDRESSING THE RISE OF HATE: REPORTING & SYSTEMIC CHANGE 

Please join the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) Pacific Northwest Office for a compelling program on the rise of hate and discrimination, and conversation on how communities can more effectively report, collect data, and drive systemic change. Speakers will include Stephen Paolini, ADL Pacific Northwest Assistant Regional Director, and Miriam Aarons, ADL Pacific Northwest Advisory Board Member and Vice President of Corporate Communications, for the Bering Straits Native Corporation. Participants will learn about federal and Alaskan hate crimes law, tools, and best practices for reporting hate and bias, and the role of law enforcement in responding to hate. ADL is a century-old anti-hate organization with a dual mission to “Stop the defamation of the Jewish people and secure fair and just treatment to all.” For over 75 years, ADL’s Pacific Northwest Office has served Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Oregon through educational programs, community partnerships, and legislative advocacy.

ALASKA NATIVE CO-MANAGEMENT OF MARINE MAMMALS UNDER THE MARINE MAMMAL PROTECTION ACT (MMPA) 

Indigenous Peoples Council for Marine Mammals (IPCoMM) Chairman will give a brief summary of the MMPA sections that directly relate to traditional harvest and co-management of marine mammals, an overview of the statewide umbrella organization, along with a summary of existing co-management structures and efforts. There will be time with agency partners from USFWS, NOAA/NMFS, and U.S. Marine Mammal Commission to answer questions and hear concerns.

WHITE HOUSE LISTENING SESSION ON OCEAN CLIMATE ACTION PLAN 

The Ocean Policy Committee (OPC) is the federal government’s primary interagency coordinating body for ocean research, technology, and marine resource management. The OPC, which is co-chaired by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the Council on Environmental Quality, is developing an Ocean Climate Action Plan, which will promote ocean activities that can provide overall climate solutions and will focus on topics like conservation, green shipping, renewable energy such as offshore wind, and marine carbon dioxide removal. The OPC is interested in hearing from Tribes and Indigenous Peoples on this initiative, especially in the context of example solutions, opportunities to improve interagency coordination on this topic, and opportunities to improve Tribal coordination with the federal government on these efforts.
