2026 Board of Directors
TITLE: ENCOURAGING FULL PARTICIPATION IN THE 2026 GENERAL ELECTION
WHEREAS: The Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) is the largest statewide Native organization in Alaska and its membership includes 192 federally recognized tribes, 152 village corporations, 11 regional corporations and 11 regional nonprofit and tribal consortiums that contract and compact to run federal and state programs; and
WHEREAS: The mission of AFN is to enhance and promote the cultural, economic, and political voice of the entire Alaska Native community; and
WHEREAS: Alaska Native voters have the power to shape decisions that affect our communities, rights, and future; and
WHEREAS: AFN delegates have been selected to represent their communities and organizations; and
WHEREAS: Most Alaska Natives are not members of the two main political parties; and
WHEREAS: AFN’s strength rests in the unity of Alaska Native peoples and our ability to advance shared priorities while respecting differences in political views; and
WHEREAS: AFN members share a commitment to protecting subsistence, strengthening self-determination, and improving the well-being of Alaska Native communities, regardless of individual candidate preferences; and
WHEREAS: AFN strives to speak with one voice, and we have a shared belief and message around voter participation; and
WHEREAS: voter education and participation provide an opportunity for AFN members to work together and strengthen the Alaska Native voice in public policy; and
WHEREAS: The AFN Board of Directors has determined that it is in the best interest of AFN not to endorse any specific candidates in the 2026 General Election.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT: the delegates of the 2026 Annual AFN Convention hereby express our appreciation for all the statewide candidates; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: The delegates of the 2026 Annual AFN Convention call upon all Alaska Natives to participate in the 2026 general election by engaging fellow Alaskans on AFN priorities and encouraging all of our membership to get out and participate in our democracy by voting, whether it be early voting beginning October 19, absentee voting, or in-person voting on November 3.
