The Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) is pleased to host, in coordination with the Alaska Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a presentation on the recently published draft EIS regarding ANCSA 17(d)(1) withdrawals. The draft EIS and supporting documents are available on BLM’s website here. The presentation is scheduled for Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. via Zoom.
The presentation will cover the draft environmental impact statement to evaluate the effects of opening certain lands subject to ANCSA 17(d)(1) withdrawals. Revoking withdrawals could open lands for mineral entry, leasing, and potential development. Opening 17(d)(1) lands could also lead to the conveyance of land out of federal ownership, including through the Statehood Act, which would remove the federal subsistence priority from these lands. AFN wants to ensure our membership understands the impacts and opportunities of these proposed withdrawals. Public comment is open until February 14, 2024; comments may be submitted through BLM’s website, here.
You can read more about 17(d)(1) withdrawals here.
